Research

Cutting edge research has always been a central component of the work of the FCI. Whether it involves exploring FC as a method of communication or how students with disabilities can be afforded greater access to general education curriculum, researchers located both at Syracuse University and elsewhere across the country are engaged in research that challenges current notions of disability and pushes for greater inclusion and communication access for all.

The Institute, committed to quality research, explores several aspects of facilitated communication and consults with other researchers on method and design.  Past and current projects include:

•      strategies for enabling individuals to become independent in their typing
•     methods for confirming authorship of typed communication
•     parent/family experiences with the method.
•     the relationship between facilitated communication and speech development.
•     autobiographies by people with disabilities who use facilitation to communicate.
•     public policy issues related to facilitation and communication
•     self determination and participation
•     inclusive schooling and community living
