The Inclusion Institutes at Syracuse University
Holding the Potential of Everyone

photograph of Jamie Burke sitting on a wallHi folks, I’d like to introduce myself to you.  My name is Jamie Burke and I am from Syracuse, New York.  Currently, I’m 21 years old and a junior at Syracuse University in the College of Human Ecology.  I am very interested in making communication a happy absolute in autism, simply holding the potential of everyone.  My life embraces books, libraries, attending Syracuse Symphony, bowling, and being at camp on Lake Ontario with its peaceful fresh winds and hot sun.  Family times and joy of my brothers and relatives assumes that within the circle of life, all can be attempted.  Journeys are struggles and successes and I hope you enjoy this snapshot of my continuing journey through my video. Thank you.

“Being included has meant everything to me.”  From preschool to high school graduation, Jamie was included in regular classes along side his peers, first at Jowonio Preschool and then in his home school district of Westhill in Syracuse,New York. This meant regular training of teaching staff so that Jamie could receive the appropriate support for communication throughout the day. “Teachers sought my answers” and his parents provided the support at home for doing homework. At twelve, Jamie started to read aloud his typing. From this, he has gone on to develop his ability to speak.  “It feels like freedom from autism.” Click here to learn more about Jamie’s going from typing to talking.

“Books were like water to the desert.” Jamie knew how to read long before he could read his words aloud.  While his love of books was consistently visible, it was important that his parents and teachers saw his interaction with books as meaningful and deliberate. “This is the story of my journey……”  Support for Jamie’s communication was developed through strong home/school collaboration and a commitment to best practice.
